Decision Task

A Decision Task definition is used to automatically evaluate a conditional expression applied to the current work item that enters this task to either route the work item on one path when the specified condition is true or on another path when the condition is false.

Decision Task Description

A Decision Task node in the workflow path is used to enforce an automatic binary decision to determine which one of two possible workflow paths a work item will follow as it exits the Decision Task node.

For example, if an Accounts Payable Manager must make a decision in a prior manual user task, such as “Approve Invoice”, the manager may decide to “Approve” or “Deny” the payment by updating an index field with this decision.

The Decision Task uses the index value to route the work item in one of two (2) possible path-directions in the workflow based on the whether the index value equals “Approve” or “Deny” (i.e., A binary decision that results in the work item following the “Approve” path or the “Deny” path).

Note:  The Decision Task does not support human interaction since it is an automated task.  It is placed in the path to make automatic decisions based on business rules related to the current work item and the appropriate workflow branch it should follow.

The tabs for multiple types of tasks that the Decision Task has in common with other tasks are listed with x-marks in the grid (above) and they are explained in detail in a previous section (Task Definition – Common Tabs).
